The Borderlands Education Center (BEC) in partnership with the College of Education, Native American Advancement, Initiatives & Research and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Initiatives hosted the 33rd Annual Conference of the Association of Academic Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean (AAPLAC) 2022. This conference was held from February 16 to 19, 2022.

The “Cultural Awareness and Social Justice” conference was organized as a hybrid event with emphasis on Rights of Indigenous People, Borderlands and Intercultural Education, BIPOC and Migrant Students. José Francisco Calí Tzay, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, spoke about the rights of indigenous peoples during a keynote address. Daily sessions featured a variety of presentations and discussions, ample time for networking and serendipitous connection among a variety of scholars, educators, and NGO practitioners, as well as an optional Saturday session highlighting the local Native cultural richness, past and present, of our Tucson surroundings. More than one hundred attendees were registered for this conference.
